Works 1950-1970
October 11th - November 9 th, 2024
This exhibition proposes works by artists belonging to the kinetic and optical art, that, although coming from different geographical backgrounds, share several affinities in their path.
La Longue Marche, created in 1974 by Julio Le Parc (Mendoza, Argentina, 1928) opens the exhibition. Published by the Galerie Denis René in Paris, this is the silkscreen representation (no. 6 sheets, cm.75x75 Ed. 30/200) of on of the most famous artist’s work, composed of ten acrylic on canvas paintings of big dimensions (cm.190x190 each)
La Longue Marche, named after the epic 1934-35 political march in China, was an itinerant trip through Argentina (2 April - 22 July 1974) during which Le Parc and his group brought their works directly to the people, avoiding traditional institutions. The main objective of this artistic march was to democratise art, bringing it in the streets, squares and public places, to allow a wider public to have access to and interact with it.
The works are arranged in a seemingly endless sequence, in which the artist uses geometric shapes, vibrant colours and light effects to create a dynamic and immersive visual experience; a work that invites the viewer on a personal journey, where movement and active participation become an integral part of the work itself, reflecting the artist's ongoing exploration of the relationship between art, light and perception.
Franco Costalonga (Venice, 1933-2019), an optical artist, is present in the exhibition with Operazione QM, 1991, focuses his work on the interaction between light and movement; a significant example of how art can explore and manipulate visual perception, using geometry, light and reflection to create immersive, dynamic and engaging experiences.
The exhibition continues with Jan Van Den Abbeel, (Grammont, Belgium, 1943-2018) a Belgian constructivist artist, strongly influenced by geometric abstractionism and the continuous exploration of shapes and colours. Characteristic of his works is a grid composed of blocks with elongated shapes develop, aim to express a well-reasoned three-dimensional construction, called ‘constructive mathematics’.
The three-dimensionality of his works fascinates and leads to a spatial structure accompanied by an astonishing optical effect; also in this case, as in op art, the image changes in relation to the position of the work and the point of view.
Other artists in the exhibition: Vittorio Bellini (Vertova, Bergamo, 1936-2009), Rolando Canfora (Orte, Viterbo, 1938-2000), Alan Davie (Grangemouth, Scozia, 1920-2014), Galliano Mazzon (Camisano Vicentino, 1896-Milano, 1978), Gianfranco Pardi (Milano, 1933-2012), Jorge Piqueras (Lima, 1925- Parigi, 2020), Vincent Pirruccio (Siracusa, provincia di, 1946-Los, Grecia, 2014), Fabrizio Plessi (Reggio Emilia, 1940), Plum Cake (1983-2000 Gianni Cella, 1953, Romolo Pallota, 1954, Claudio Ragni, 1955), Vincenzo Satta (Nuoro, 1937).
