Eugène Pierre François Giraud

In the Parisian salons Giraud enjoys portraying the celebrities of the time and the set of these drawings and sketches constitutes a valuable iconography of political, artistic and worldly society from the reign of Louis-Philippe to the Third Republic.
He entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris on 29 August 1821 and was a pupil of Hersent and Richomme.
In 1826 he obtained the "Prix de Rome" for engraving, while in 1833 and 1863 some of his paintings were awarded medals.
In 1844 he saw Spain with his father Alexandre Dumas and in 1847 he travelled to Algeria and Egypt, painting lively typical scenes. Figure in the Salons from 1831 to 1866 with numerous portraits and history paintings.
He is a frequent visitor to the most important Parisian salons, especially that of Princess Mathilde. In 1862, in Saint-Gratien, guest of the Princess, the sculptor friend Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux executed the plaster model for the bronze bust of Giraud (now kept at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris).

On 4 May 1851 he was decorated with the Legion of Honour and in 1866 he was made an Officer.
